Five reasons why working in Jamaica beats working at Google

Can Jamaica become the new “silicon paradise”? Conditions appear favourable for the Caribbean, and especially Jamaica, to become the next great tech hub. Jamaica’s own government has created a new “Technology Innovation Fund” to support technology and startups that may potentially usher in a new tech boom on the island and the entire Caribbean region. Countries like Belize, the Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico and Aruba have been taking steps to improve bandwidth, strengthen telecommunications infrastructure and foster events to lure the tech community with their tropical charms.

Here are five reasons working in Jamaica would be better than working at Google:

  1. The spaces. Sure, Google has designed very innovative work spaces  that are the envy of employees around the world, but even their creative offices don’t hold a candle to working from a beautiful Caribbean beach or a rich, lively and colourful city, no matter how many foosball tables you can find in the break room.A 487960
  2. The down time. Some of the most brilliant ideas can come to us when we are engaged in a leisurely activity, or even a group game at work. But why settle for synthetic indoor putting greens when your championship golf course comes with stunning ocean views?Screen Shot 2016-05-02 at 11.24.34 AM
  3. The commute. Sure, self-driving cars, complimentary shuttles and manicured biking trails are pretty amazing, but they can’t beat a walk over white sand, or a quick sail over a turquoise-and-teal ocean.wateractiv
  4. The water cooler. Sorry, but pricey designer coconut water from a refrigerator doesn’t compare to the natural and unadulterated goodness that comes directly from the source. The packaging is also 100% biodegradable.Paradise Lost Facebook 1
  5. The Vibe. Some tech companies meticulously design work policies and environments to boost productivity, creativity and innovation. But when it comes to great vibes and putting a smile on your face, Jamaica has the music, the spirit and the attitude. Here, the good island vibes will have tech geniuses developing the next game-changing algorithm…while feeling perfectly irie.
