Eat, Drink and be Merry at Jamaica’s Oktoberfest 2016

By Alicia Loredo

Originally known for being a celebration that honoured the royal wedding of Bavarian Crown Prince Ludwig and Princess Therese of Saxony-Hildburghausen, Oktoberfest has evolved to a traditional autumn festival held every October in Munich, Germany. The event is celebrated in countries all over the world as a nod to autumn, beer and German culture.

Many don’t know that Jamaica’s history as a German settlement dates back to the 1770s. Today, the friendship between both countries is celebrated in a very special way. Every year on the first Sunday of October, the Jamaican-German Society holds its own Oktoberfest celebration in Kingston. For over 35 years, people have been gathering to enjoy a bevy of German dishes, wines and of course, beer!

The festival itself comprises of lively Jamaican-German music along with games, dancing and prizes for audience members to participate in. This vividly incorporated festival takes place at the Alhambra Inn in Kingston and is open to all. Jamaica’s Oktoberfest will offer 12 types of authentic German beer from various brands, as well as Jamaican beer.

So, if you happen to be visiting Jamaica from October 2, make sure to pack your Bavarian dirndl dress or lederhosen.
